CASTING NOTICE
The Cleaning Lady, is a super-natural comedy about a young Latina who works as a cleaning lady during the day and a spiritual cleaning lady at night.
Opening October 16th – November 22th for a 6 weekend run. (Rehearsals will usually be Monday through Friday 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm and some Saturdays 1 to 5 pm if necessary.)
Compensation is Actor’s Equity Assoc. AEA 99 Seat Waiver contract and 4 comps.
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 5 pm at CASA 0101, 2009 E. First St.., L.A.,CA 90033
CASTING will take place at 2102 E. First St., (one block east of CASA 0101) cross street is St. Louis in Boyle Heights.
CHARACTERS
LUZ FUENTES, 21, innocent and naive, shy, insecure about her abilities as a curandera, yet strong.
ABUELITA, 60s, a curandera in Mexico who serves as Luz’s mentor who encourages her to follow her destiny as a modern day curandera.
RAFAEL, 50s, Luz’s father, over-protective, cares deeply about his only daughter, but doesn’t want her to pursue her destiny as a curandera for fear of losing her like he did his wife.
ENRIQUE, 30s, a demon using the body of a drop-dead gorgeous -man who tries to seduce Luz into using her abilities as a curandera to allow him to stay on earth.
LUPITA, late 20s, a cleaning lady who works with Luz, she loves to party, too friendly with men and is always in pursuit of her next Friday night date.
DORA, 40 – 50s, a cleaning lady who works with Luz, sees Luz as a daughter and is always trying to encourage her to be her best and believe in herself.
MARIANA, 30 – 40s, a cleaning lady who works with Luz, married, conservative, but always willing to be shocked by Lupita and try new things.
MARIA LA CURANDERA, 40s, a brave curandera who refuses to assist a demon who requires her help.

Actors cast from this audition will participate in readings of the play as our production company develops “Tree of Fire” for future production. We are casting for one male actor and three female actors. Character breakdowns and additional information about the play and the production company are written below.

Synopsis
When a Magnolia tree catches fire in an aged and ominous women’s prison, three female inmates forgotten and left to perish are jolted as their lives are threatened, into memories of their past that inform the truth of their souls and the urgent need to expose the inhumanity of the prison to the world.
Character Breakdown
MALE (Black or Latino, 30 – 40 years old): Male actor will play a wide variety of characters, including MAN (Boyfriend), LEO, BENJAMIN, LAURENCE, ANGEL, INTERCOM, RAPPER, PIMP, DARIUS, and GUARD. Auditioners must exhibit a strong theatre background with extensive vocal and physical training. Casting director is looking for an actor with versatility, training, and experience to embody multiple characters within the play. Actor must email copy of headshot and resume with casting submission.
JOSEFINE (African American, 30-40 years old): Josefine is brash, funny, soulful, and daring – a true spitfire. A former prostitute, she was incarcerated for drug charges years ago and has kept catching cases in prison ever since, but nothing can damper her spirit. Requires robust acting ability.
ALMA (Latina, 30-40 years old): With a passion for knowledge and writing, Alma survived serious illness and drug addiction to dedicate her time in prison to exposing truth about the Prison Industrial Complex and her own life experiences through writing. Requires robust acting ability.
MAYA (Latina or African American, 30-40 years old): Traumatized by the murder of her treasured son and the irrevocable choices made thereafter, Maya, strong and spiritual, struggles to love herself and find purpose in her existence as a denizen of the prison. While the character does sing in the play, the casting director’s primary interest for this character is robust acting ability.

These sound pretty cool. Going to have to check one of them out. It’s good to see that art and theater is still very much alive in the community.
