A Great Month for Chicano/Latino Theater

To many of my friends who have never seen live theater, a stage play is nothing but, “to be or not to be.” Theater to them is a far cry from who they are or the language they use in everyday transas. Tu sabes.

Well, if you’ve never been to a play and you want to start with something that has familiar faces and characters, this is a good month to get acquainted with an age old art. There are four shows running now from four theater groups that each have a long running history in this town. Four powerful groups that know how to bring the Teatro: Culture Clash, Latino Theater Company, Casa0101 and Company of Angels. Below is a list of these shows and the info you need.

But pleeeeeeze Raza, no talking during the show. If you have been to the theater and want to bring some friends along, kindly break down a couple of rules for the show. These shows are pricey so let’s not ruin it for others. Here is a short list of etiquette :

1. Be on time. It is very important to be on time to a play. Arriving late is a huge distraction and some shows won’t even let you in after the show has started.

2. No talking during the show. The actors can hear everything in the audience, even whispers. The last show I went to I had two mensos sitting behind me saying, “ese chillon eres tu buey,” and, “se parece a tu novia.” I love it when people have fun but save it for after the show.

3. Turn off your cell phones. Easy right? No. Some people put their cell phones on vibrate, that also distracts. Others think it’s okay to text during a show. Even worse, please don’t do it. Turn your cell phones off completely and all will go well. Also, if your bluetooth earpiece has a blinking light turn it off.

4. No pictures. Simple.

Enjoy the Teatro, Raza. It is a mirror, a friend and a teacher.

You forgot the first rule of the theater:

You don’t talk about the theater.

Good article uncle, keep it up. This reminds me of the time we went to go see The Black Rider, and I forgot to bring my glasses….
