—————————————————————

2023 is a place I frequent to catch bands that tread the outer limits of the LA music scene. Tonight, instead of bands they are hosting a late night drawing salon, filling the space with artists and models for anyone interested in coming down with a sketch pad and pencil to make use of the specimens presented.

They only ask for a small donation. No one will be turned away.
There is a full cash bar and there will be a DJ filling the air with sonic stimuli.

Come down!
Remember to respect the neighbors and the space as you come and go.

Antigua Coupon Promo

It is high noon in Cypress Park and Antigua Coffee House is jumpin’. It’s amazing how quickly word has spread about this place. It’s like a community reunion center. In the couple of hours that I’ve sat here reading my book, a number of people walked in that recognized at least one other person here. It’s like the Cheers of coffee shops.

Pancho! Xochitl! Fancy meeting you here Mitch!

Nestled on the corner of Loreto and Figueroa, Antigua has once again sparked vigor to a blighted section of town.

The hustle and bustler’s come here for a piece of sanity. In one corner of the shop Mitch offers a young lady a chance to join a multi-level marketing team. Next to me Pancho and Mando talk about their days at CSULA and trade contacts for an upcoming educational presentation. In the farthest corner Xochitlmilco and her boyfriend Cuauhtemoc Huitzil do (more…)

Years ago, when I thought I was a rapper, I was lucky enough to be in a group called Slowrider. We had some good times writing music, discovering sounds and laughing for hours on end. We toured a little and we recorded a memorable CD that I still bump at least once a month from my iPod. Word on the street is; it still gets a lot of play.

Ernesto Yerena: Hecho Con Ganas

HECHO CON GANAS (HCG) is the new project from Ernesto Yerena, a 23 year old El Centro artist that has stenciled his way to Los Angeles.

He describes HCG on his website as, “an experiment and art-publisher that explores the lengths one can reach through motivation, persistence, and hard work. The phrase hecho con ganas is Spanish for made with motivation / desire / passion. HCG isn’t just a title, but a clear and powerful phrase that sums up the very spirit of the project.”

He adds that while HCG is heavily influenced by Chicano / Mexican-American culture, it also honors those who work against all odds to reach success with ganas regardless of culture, nationality, sex or age.

A Great Month for Chicano/Latino Theater

Olivier as Hamlet

Olivier as Hamlet

To many of my friends who have never seen live theater, a stage play is nothing but, “to be or not to be.” Theater to them is a far cry from who they are or the language they use in everyday transas. Tu sabes.

Well, if you’ve never been to a play and you want to start with something that has familiar faces and characters, this is a good month to get acquainted with an age old art. There are four shows running now from four theater groups that each have a long running history in this town. Four powerful groups that know how to bring the Teatro: Culture Clash, Latino Theater Company, Casa0101 and Company of Angels. Below is a list of these shows and the info you need. (more…)

“Mexicans drink to confess” – Octavio Paz

A funeral creates an excuse for a “party” and a group of friends who have not seen each other in years find themselves in one house with lots of liquor and plenty of “catching up” to do. And you know what happens when you have alcohol and a chillon in the room. Confessions, confessions, confessions.

Gabriel, played by Geoffrey Rivas, just buried his mother that he had not seen in years. He left the neighborhood abruptly over 20  years ago, without saying good bye to his best friends and  never looked back. Now, a successful man, he is thrown into a situation where he has to host his friends at his house. Much to the dismay of his wife Sonia, played by Lucy Rodriguez, (more…)

Blessed is he who on the night of Artwalk finds street parking within a block of his destination.

I arrived downtown at about 8:30 last night and had one thing in mind, going home. I was beat.  I only had two missions on my mind last night: say hi to my Citizen LA peeps and take pictures.

I had too much to drink the night before at the Solitude opening night reception. Partied at The Gorbals with the cast, crew and special guests. (It’s cool to get some perks because I do this for free.) But, I did break the whole training for a triathlon thing and got drunk. So I was in no mood to party at Artwalk or even to stay out late. Farmersville Sider Writer: A Weekend at Mom’s

Angeleno is a label that I am proud of. Eastsider is a given. East Losian is my new term for declaring my township. But even to a proud citizen of LA, there is nothing that feeds the soul as much as a trip out of this metropolitan madness. The two weeks in Mexico I keep dreaming of keep distancing them self from my grasp. So I was happy to take a three-day weekend at mom’s house. Yes! That’s always a good idea.

Somewhere between Bakersfield and Fresno is a place called Nowhere. (more…)

Featured Writer: Al Lucero

Friday, September 4th, 2009

bigsurAl asked me that night, “Do I look drunk?” We laughed. I met him and his daughter at a bar in Boyle Heights. Al is in his late 50′s. An old school Chicano. I had a very short coversation with him.

By the way, he was drunk and very proud to introduce his daughter and himself. He told me he’s a writer and I wrote down his website. I asked him if I can share this on my site.

“If you want to, yes. If not no,” we laughed.

After reading the first chapter, I decided, yes.

Here is an exerpt and the link to Al Lucero, enjoy:

CHAPTER ONE – BIG SUR

Somewhere I have a real mom and a real dad.

I used to know who they were, but I was wrong.

For four years life had been a series of teaching jobs, cheap apartments, and dimly lit bars in a string of northern California cities.  I was alone since my divorce, living paycheck to paycheck.  A brain tumor had just been diagnosed. For several years my head had been playing host to a star-shaped mass spanning eight to ten centimeters, a bit over three inches.  I figured somehow this had to be payment for a karmic debt it must have taken lifetimes to acquire. Apparently I had not lived very harmoniously.  Trying to find the cloud’s silver lining, I concluded this must be my final installment.
